Mrs. Britton Hostess
At W.C.T.U. Meet Here

The West Jefferson Woman's Christian Temperance Union was entertained at the home of Mrs. E. J. Britton, with Mrs. Joseph Pearce as co-hostess. Mrs. Richard Johnson assisted.

The meeting was called to order by the president, Mrs. Oleh Braithwaite, with the members joining in the pledge of allegiance to the American, Christian, and Temperance Flags.

Mrs. George Eley conducted a very fine devotional using the National Theme for April, "Why Stand Ye All the Day Idle?" She presented some startling facts on the amount of alcoholic beverages sold (against the law) to teenagers and young people all over our Nation. She also discussed some of the work being done by Christian Youth Groups to combat this evil and destructive practice. Much is being accomplished in many States to stop the use of liquors and beer especially among our young people. Ohio is doing some fine and constructive work through the Loyal Temperance Legion and Youth Temperance Council.

Letters were sent to our Ohio Congressmen at Washington, urging their cooperation in passing legislation to control the advertising of beer and wine on Radio and Television; also advertising of hard liquors in newspapers and magazines. Since these media all come under Inter-state Commerce, it is up to the Legislature to control them.

The County President, Mrs. Fern Thomas, was present and presented some of the work discussed at the State Mid-year. She spoke of the project for sending fruit juices to the soldiers in Korea. Madison County WCTU has pledged $100.00 this year. The local Union has contributed for the past two years.

Several leaflets were read and discussed and after a very instructive meeting, members and guests adjourned to the dining room where at flower-decorated tables a very delicious lunch was served by the hostesses, including a special non-alcoholic fruit beverage appetizer.

Other guests were Mrs. Heston and Mrs. Carl DeLong.

The May meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Ben Straley, with Miss Flora Truitt as Devotion and Program Leader. This meeting will be at 2:00 p.m. All 1953 dues should be paid so that State Report can be sent in. Sales stamps will be greatly appreciated by the Union.
