Last Wednesday we had a violent Gale of Wind from N. N. E. to N. and N. W. to S. W. which did considerable Damage. Capt. Pines, in a Sloop from Philadelphia, was cast away on the N. E. Side of this Island, at a Distance from the Land, and was almost miraculously preserved in his Boat, till he came within 20 or 30 Yards of the Shore, which he had no View of till then: when the Boat overset, by which Accident one Man lost his Life. -- The Mate and one of the People reached the Shore, and acquainted the Inhabitants with their Misfortune, who immediately ran to the Assistance of the rest, and discovered the Captain and two Men on a Rock, about 30 Yards from the Shore, just expiring.
