Great Robbery.-A most daring robbery was committed on board the steamer Perry on her passage from this place to Providence on Thursday, 1st inst. Mr. P. P. Remington who has for many years been the faithful messenger for the Banks in this city and Providence, was robbed of his bag in which he usually carried the money to and from the Banks, in a most surprising manner. He was in the lower cabin at the time, and for a moment laid the bag on the table, when it was instantly exchanged by some one already prepared for that purpose, who left in its place another precisely like it containing packages of paper done up similar to those in his own identical bag. So well did the thief plan and execute his work, that Mr. Remington never suspected the robbery until his arrival at the bank. The bag contained $45,746.68 $20,115 in bills; $24,131.68 in checks and drafts, and $1,500 in American gold,-distributed among the Banks in this city as follows:

As soon as the robbery was ascertained, despatches by telegraph were sent in all directions, and the payment of the checks were at once stopped, but whether these precautionary measures will secure the thief remains to be seen.-- The money stolen could not have been in more desirable shape to use without detection, and it will therefore require more than ordinary vigilance to ferret out the robber.

We are sorry for the loss of the Banks, and for the unfortunate circumstance also of Mr. Remington's losing the money, after he had for so many years done the business confided to him without loss or accident to the Banks.

A reward of $5,000 has been offered for the recovery of the money and the detection of the thief.-Newport (R. I.) Advertiser.
