A new "T type" signal has been installed at the intersection of State Route 56 and U. S. Route 40 at Summerford. The intersection has been termed a "high accident rate" crossing by Harold G. Eckhardt, traffic engineer for the State Highway Department.

The new signal is made up of a three-lens cross bar, all red, with the vertical section of the "T" showing the caution and go signals. The enlarged red area provides a more discernible target for approaching motorists.

The Associated Press reported that the new signal was installed at the intersection on a trial basis only, in the hope that it would reduce the traffic accident rate there. During the trial period, the state will keep an account of accidents and law violations to determine the effectiveness of the new device. It is the only installation of its kind at present.

Eckhardt was quoted as saying that the new device required almost a year to develop.
