MIDSUMMER FANCIES.
BY J. W. BROWNE.
I.
What care I now for the wide rough world.
Its failures, successes, its strife?
Undisturbed I sit in my cottage,
The happiest body in life.
II.
My dog keeps ward at the gateway,
The birds make love in the trees;
My O'Neil, under vine and fig-tree,
Falls asleep mid murmur of bees.
III.
The south blows a breath through the lattice,
With perfumed odors o'erladen,
And kissing my cheek, O delicious!
Like passionate kiss of a maiden-
IV.
The kiss of a maiden on tip-toe,
And no tell-tale star in the skies;
Deep love o'erflowing her true heart
Through love-lighted, deep, lustrous eyes,
V.
Mid the gold-flecked glory of sunset,
Dim visions of boyhood in dreams,
With witch-woven, whimsical love-knots
Like indistinct mists from the streams.
VI.
Come over long years intervening
Awaking the past, in fancy
I romp with, I play with, I flirt with
My Ruth, my Susie, my Nancy.
VII.
So what care I for the wide, rough world.
Its failures, successes, its strife?
Undisturbed I sit in my cottage,
The happiest body in life.
