A letter to Clyde Hobbs, superintendent of the Crow Indian reservation, received this week paints an interesting picture of a Crow Indian girl working with Spanish speaking Mexicans from Texas, who are migrant laborers in Ohio.
Miss Stops, who during the school term is studying for work in Christian education in Chicago, has an unusual summer job. She writes:
"Here I am in Napoleon, Ohio, working for the Migrant Ministry under National Council of Churches of U.S.A. So far, my co-worker and I have been visiting the migrants (in our area, which is Henry county, they are Mexicans from Texas, who are here for the picking season) and acquainting them with our work. At present, every evening we go to one of the camps and have a time of supervised recreation, show education films and have devotions. I'm trying to make use of what Spanish I have, and I'm having a great time in it.
"I'm getting $40 each week and I'm sending the school $25 for tuition and the rest for me to eat on and petty cash on hand. I don't think I'll make it home this summer, because my job ends Sept. 5 and I plan to work for the school as receptionist Sept. 6-8.
'Enclosed is a letter which I received in which you might be interested."
The enclosure reveals that Miss Stops earned an honor in Chicago. It is from Robert W. Rietz, executive director of the American Indian Center in Chicago and reads:
"Dear Miss Stops,
"Congratulations on your receiving second place honors in our Miss American Indian of Chicago annual competition. I know that you are a credit to our organization and I am proud and happy in the way which you represented us all on the stage and during the course of the program. Though our Exposition and through the many other affairs we have throughout the year, we bring to the attention of the people of Chicago some of the fine contributions that Indian people everywhere are making to our own American life. In your behavior and participation, you have added something to this.
Please accept my sincere thanks."
