Houston Desegregates Rest Rooms In County Building

HOUSTON, TeXAS - (ANP) -

Desegregation came last week to public rest rooms in the Harris County courthouse and the Civil Courts building.

Signs designating the 17 public rest rooms for "White" and "Colored" were quietly replaced.

The new signs say simply Men and "Women."

County Commissioner E. A. (Squatty) Lyons said he instructed Building Superintendent Grady Albert to remove color barriers from the rest room doors.

He said the County Commissioners Court agreed to take down the segregation signs on the rest rooms on the advice of Atty. Jack Binion, who represents the county in a federal court lawsuit involving proposed desegregation of the county's Sylvan Beach Park

"People were ignoring those signs anyway," Lyons added.

In lowering the racial barrier a notch, the county joined with the federal government as far as restrictions on use of public rest rooms is concerned
