What is this article about?
In a letter to Mr. Wilson, V. Du Pont defends his vote for Mr. Rodney as Senator, explaining that any prior support for Mr. McLane was to counter Rodney's republican opponent and unify the party, not oppose Rodney. He criticizes an anonymous 'Calm Observer' for misrepresentations.

Mr. Wilson—When a man tells publicly a lie and is publicly told that he is a liar, and then goes on and repeats the same story over again, the only way to get rid of him is to knock him down if you can. But when he hides himself, and keeps in the dark and at a respectful distance, what is to be done?
Fortunately the word of an honest man will go farther than the assertions of twenty sneaking, cowardly, anonymous scribblers, and I do declare to my fellow citizens that I gave my vote to Mr. Rodney for Senator.
As to what I might have said to Mr. Ryland and perhaps many others in favor of Mr. McLane, the public will keep in mind that Mr. Rodney had a very strong opponent, who to the last moment prevented the republican party from uniting in his favor. A caucus was held in the Committee room a very short time before the election: at that caucus I voted for Mr. Rodney as every body knows, and he had a majority, but still he was not conclusively taken up, and it was only after the first ballot that his opponent withdrew.
Mr. Rodney could not be elected without an union in the republican ranks; Mr. McLane could with the assistance of some federal votes; and with great respect and regard for the other gentleman who divided the republican interest with Mr. Rodney, and whom I am sure would not have voted for himself on the occasion, and in my opinion had some claims, still I preferred Mr. M'Lane to him, and all I have said to that effect before the election was not surely intended, nor can be fairly construed as an opposition to Mr. Rodney, whom I did support and was determined to support, as many of my friends can certify, but only to the other candidate set up in opposition to Mr. Rodney.
I hope I shall one day find who is Calm Observer, and then give him some public and warm acknowledgments for his kindness and veracity.
V. DU PONT.
