Health Board Reports on Harlem Conditions

At the monthly meeting of the Harlem Board of Health, reports from the state board regarding the condition of Harlem city water were read showing the water to be, in general, satisfactory, but that the sample sent from one Harlem dwelling showed unusually high bacteria content. Although the state board advised taking samples from other sources than those showing contamination, the local board went on record as believing that specimens should be submitted from places taken at random, and not from those known to be satisfactory. The condition of the city water remains deplorable as to taste and odor, regardless of the state board's report. The local board plans to make a survey within the month to determine how many Harlem families are actually using the local water for drinking and cooking, and how many are using water from outside for these purposes.

Complaints from the north side of town regarding disposal of waste, etc. at several residences were investigated by the board, and due to the nearness of the season for general clean-up, it was decided to let matters stand for the few remaining weeks.

Seventy-five cases of influenza were reported during the past month, with many cases unreported. There were six cases of whooping cough reported. The National Guardsmen were vaccinated for small pox and typhoid fever during the month.

One death and four births were reported during February.
