POST OFFICE REPORTS

The majority of the committee of the Senate have made another elaborate report on the Post Office, which is, as was expected, but a literal reiteration of the former charges. It has been followed up, however, by a counter report of the minority, consisting of Mr. Grundy and Mr. Robinson, who have given a somewhat different view of the subject. Very little has been elicited which seems to a candid mind entitled to censure, except some transactions between O. B. Brown, late chief clerk of the Department, and one or more of the contractors, which strongly indicated a sort of partnership in one or more of the contracts. Brown, however, alleges that the transactions alluded to, were in behalf of his wards, the children of his wife by a former husband, for whom he was guardian.

It is also stated, "that shortly before the Bank of Maryland failed, Mr. Brown had deposited in it $2000 of his own money. That after the failure, he transferred the certificate of deposit which bore five per cent. interest, to the Department, and caused the Department to be credited in the books of the Bank for the same, the Department being indebted to the Bank in a considerable amount, and also procured a credit in the books of the Department for the amount to himself."

The minority report as well as that of the majority, speak of these transactions as well as some others, in relation to Mr. Brown's official conduct, as highly improper, though they believe his errors unintentional, and since these things have been elicited, Mr. Brown has been induced to resign.

As the policy of the opposition papers is and has been, to give publicity to the majority report only, we intend to give our readers a view of the other side of the question, by publishing an abstract of the report of the minority in our next.
