Extract of a letter from a gentleman in Greenborough, to his friend in Augusta, Georgia, dated Sept. 16, 1802.
"By a letter received a few days ago from Col. Hawkins, it appears that it is the wish of the Creeks to give up the lands as far as the Ockmulga: they meet this month at the Hickory Ground, in the territory of the Upper Creeks, and as the Indians never were so willing to relinquish territory of the Upper Creeks, and as I may hazard the assertion, that Ockmulga, will no doubt be obtained. They say that by selling this land, they will be enabled to get stock and working tools; so far has this good man (Col. Hawkins) succeeded in civilizing these savages--13 chiefs came to him the 26th August, with the information that they had shot the Indian who had killed Gentrey, of Cumberland: Indeed, he finds very little difficulty in having shot or whipped those that transgress his orders, which are as punctually obeyed as an officer who commands a garrison. Presuming this will be pleasing intelligence, I hasten to communicate it."
