Of the Newly Elected Ocala Subschool District Trustees

The trustees met yesterday afternoon at the office of Judge W. S. Bullock and organized permanently by electing Judge Bullock chairman, C. L. Bittinger secretary and Simon Benjamin treasurer.

The last Friday afternoon before the first Monday of each month was selected as the time for the school trustees to hold their regular meeting. Place: Judge Bullock's office.

Mr. Benjamin reported that County Treasurer Griffin had paid to him $1100 of district money, and Treasurer Benjamin was authorized to pay over to the Board of Public Instruction of the county $1000 on an indebtedness due them from the Ocala district.

The following bills were audited and the treasurer will draw checks for the same:

Star, for publishing trustee election notice and program for high school commencement, $14.20; $8 for services in holding trustee election, namely, E. W. Craybill, W. L. Ditto, J. L. Lancaster and C. L. Sistrunk; W. K. McDonald, printing election tickets, $1.50; Rheinauer & Co., ribbons, 30 cents; Ovel & Kester, Indianapolis, Ind., $15 for diplomas for graduating class.

The bill of $6 to Registration Officer D. M. Barco for preparing a poll tax list was referred, as the board thought his salary provided for the work.

The secretary was authorized to secure stationery for the board and he was also requested to return checks sent by the comptroller made payable to the old subschool district trustees, and ask that he issue new checks for the same amount, payable to the new board.

On motion of Mr. Benjamin, the secretary was requested to write the state comptroller, asking that all money due the Ocala subschool district, in the future, from redemption of land tax certificates, be remitted direct to the board.

Communications were received from B. F. Hartwell, principal of Howard Academy, colored, suggesting slight alterations and repairs on that building, and from Professor Griffin, late principal of the Ocala High School, with kindly suggestions for the good of the school. Referred for information.

The following applications were filed for the principalship of the Ocala High School: J. W. Reid, head of the grammar department; P. Wilson Green, principal of the Belleview school; J. T. Mallicoat, principal of the Harriman, Tenn., high school; E. S. Bathrop, principal of the Westville, Fla. high school; W. H. Rouse, educator, Castle Hall, Tenn.; I. I. Himes, principal Palatka school; Henry Richards, principal Lake City school; C. V. Watch, University of Alabama; W. T. Gary, assistant to the principal, Ocala High School; Oliver M. Given, assistant to the principal of the Summerlin Institute, Bartow, Fla.

The recommendations accompanying most of the applications are so voluminous that it was deemed best, for their careful reading and consideration and to do justice to all applicants, especially as several desired to have a personal interview with the board, that the question be deferred until Friday, June 1st, when such applicants as desire (the matter resting entirely with them) can be present.

The remainder of the session was devoted to selecting and recommending as teachers to the county board for appointment the following persons, all old teachers in the school: Misses Neilie Stevens, Fannie Clark, May Turnley, Hattie Dye, Mrs. M. T. Turner and W. T. Gary.

The following former teachers also filed their applications, but time was not found to act on them: Misses Irma Porter, Miriam Pasteur and Sarah Bull.

New applicants: Misses Yancey, Lizzie A. Turner and Mattie A. Layne, also the old teaching force of Howard Academy.

At a late hour the board adjourned to meet Friday, June 1, at 4 p. m., at Judge Bullock's office, not, however, without taking steps to perfect the trustees' bond for $2000 for the safe handling of the funds to come into their keeping for disbursement.
