one J-h H- of M-d le. possessed of a considerable Estate, having lived to above fifty Years, without betraying any Inclination to Matrimony, several Persons taking Advantage of him in Liquor, and of his avaricious Temper, had bought Goods of him, some of them at a very high Price (amounting to above 200 l.) on Condition of paying him on his Wedding Day; and they had always hugg'd themselves in the Opinion that he would rather lose all the Money than subject himself to the Chains of Matrimony, 'till a few Days ago that he was taken ill; and apprehending his approaching Dissolution, he proposed to acquit his Creditors on paying the Prime Cost of his Goods, or the Money they sold them for; but they adhering obstinately to their original Contract, rather than lose so much Money to his Executors, he offered to settle 3 l. a Year for Life, on an old Woman in that Neighbourhood, on Condition of her marrying him; which she agreeing to, they went to the next Chapel the 16th Instant, the Bride-groom mounted on Horseback, with an able bodied Man behind him to keep him on, and another along-side of him for the same Purpose
