Delta, Nov. 26.
Showing that Arthur L. Craig, as manager of the North Fork Fruit Growers' association, had overdrawn his personal account several hundred dollars and failed to charge the overdrafts up on the cash book, the prosecution against the Paonia newspaperman and manager spent yesterday afternoon and this morning, with two witnesses.
Weldon Hammond, president of the association whose affairs are under discussion, spent all yesterday afternoon and part of the morning session on the stand. He testified to the apparent irregularities in Craig's bookkeeping with reference to his overdraft, and his testimony was supported by that of Mrs. R. Wallace, the accountant of Montrose, who made the audit of the books.
This afternoon other corroborative witnesses will be called.
The defense took a prominent part in the examination of each witness, and in some cases served to limit the scope of the testimony brought out by the direct questioning of the prosecution.
Judging from the opening statement made by Merle D. Vincent, attorney for Craig, the defense will attempt to overcome the testimony of the prosecution's witnesses by showing that the association was indebted to Craig for salary and an automobile for a sum much larger than his overdrafts.
The court room is crowded and feeling runs high in this city.
