The Chain In The Heart

Chain in the Heart is the title of a book released for sale this month by Random House, one of the leading publishing companies of the nation, which was written by Hubert Creekmore, a White man, and a native of Jackson, Mississippi.

Chain in the Heart is a story of a Negro family in Mississippi and its struggle against the forces of race prejudice, discrimination and tradition existing in the state. which is not likely to bring Mr. Creekmore much enthusiastic acclaim from certain quarters of thinking in Mississippi and other sections of the south.

We have just finished reading an advance copy of Chain in the Heart sent to us by Random House, and although the book is written in the form of a novel it approaches with greater clarity and truth the subject of Negro life and race relations in the state. which is the same throughout the south, than any other book dealing with the Negro and race relations which has come to our notice in a wide reading of books on such subjects.

Here in Mississippi as well as in the rest of the South both Negro and white people have their hearts chained by the mores and folkways of race prejudice and discrimination which has long needed only the deeper insight given in Hubert Creekmore's Chain in the Heart.

Those who now work and hope for the coming of the new south, with better and more wholesome relations between its white and Negro people need only hope for a wide reading of the Chain in the Heart which will not fail to bring a large increase of workers and people with the same hope for a new south, a new south which will be great blessing to the entire nation and the rest of the world.
