On the recall of Marshal Soult from Spain to Germany, to the assistance of Napoleon, he is said to have given the following piece of advice to his successor:— "Whenever you find the British army in retreat, let them alone, and they will go to the devil their own way; but if you go near them, they will get into their places, and give you such a drubbing as you never had before."
