CHARLES-TOWN. (SOUTH CAROLINA,) Feb. 23.

The whole province is now in arms, or arming, to repress the invasion of the perfidious Cherokees. In those parts where the militia are most useful, strong parties alternately range the woods.--A reward of twenty five pounds is offered by the government for every Cherokee scalp. -From fort Moore we learn, that a gang of 18 Cherokees, divided into 3 or 4 parties, on the 19th inst. way-laid and killed Ulric Tobler, Esq; a captain of the militia, wounded Mr. Calhoon, and two or three others in company escap'd unhurt.-About the same time, two men were killed and scalped near Germany’s fort- Gen. Stanwix, in consequence of the advices sent him, has detached the Virginia regiment commanded by Col. Byrd, from Pittsburgh, to act against the Cherokees as occasion might require.- Only five or six people are yet killed by the Cherokees on the Georgia side of Savannah river.--That the loss of the Long Cane settlers; who were attacked by the Indians on the 1st inst. as they were removing with their wives and children to Augusta, amounted to 50 persons, chiefly women and children, with 11 loaded waggons and carts, and that the Indians had butchered the dead bodies in a most inhuman manner.
