The Sixth Maine Regiment felled acres of woodland across the Potomac to deprive the enemy of skulking places for sharpshooters, cutting trees three feet from the ground all one way to form abattis impassable by horse or man. They also cut military roads from bridges and ferry, including one from Fort Ethan Allen at Chain Bridge to Fall's Church, constructed by Vermonters.
