"I despise you, England; I look with pity on your prostrate condition; I compassionate the melancholy disgrace of your present position. The English have put in a Tory Government; they have done away with that holy, sanctified institution, which, I may say, resembles the attributes of the Deity—the administration of justice. Nations have risen and the democratic principles reared them to dizzy splendor that they might meet a greater fall by the corrosion of oligarchical tyranny. And is England to be a solitary exception to these?—is England to stand alone in the ruin of twice more mighty kingdoms? (Cries of 'No.') Is this doom to be realized? The time is fast approaching; turn your eyes to the many convulsions which rend her sides asunder; mark the meetings which are held for the resuscitation of trade;—see her banks failing—see her laborers starving, and murdering each other—see her machinery growing rusty from disuse—see her foundries empty—see her fires blown out—you can hear no sound of the anvil—you cannot catch the cracking sound of the shuttle or the loom—all is desert—all is destitution—all is want. I look forward to no distant day, when Ireland approaches to her own independence! (Cheers.) I will then look for a parliament of our own—will seek for a House of Commons in College green—I will rally for cri bhoct sihere I can summon that judge, and I will consign him to that fate he so justly deserves. (Cries of 'the villain,' and groaning.) Yes, I will speak trumpet tongued till I obtain my end. I am not fond of vapid oratory—I do not speak syllogistically—I do not use what is called an allegory. No; but in the name of justice (and I hope I am not guilty of profanity when I invoke the name of God.) I proclaim that Ireland must have her just rights; she will insist on and obtain them in peaceful, ordinary demeanor and moderation; she will rally her forces and press forward to the wished goal..(Cheers.)"
