There are some events so brilliant and important in their consequences, that they necessarily stand alone. The reduction of Lord Cornwallis has furnished trophies and matter of joy for two campaigns. It has produced a change of Ministry in Britain; it has produced an alliance with Holland; and probably, before this time, the evacuation of Savannah and Charlestown. The year 1782 is therefore not less glorious than 1781.
A London paper of the 20th of May, it is said, contains a speech of Mr. Fox in which he declares in the House of Commons, "That four such victories as that obtained by the British over the French fleet, in the West Indies, would not compensate for the great power which preponderated against them by the union of Holland and America."
Another paper of the same month has the following paragraph- "Admiral Pigot, lately appointed to supersede the brave Rodney, had retired to a farm, and has not had his foot on ship board for twenty years past."
Since our last several families have arrived in a flag vessel from Antigua. They have fled, as it were, from the oppression of British government, to seek an asylum in America: where liberty, both civil and religious, will prevail in spite of either foreign or domestic tyranny.
