Gary Chamber Makes "Plan For Progress"
A year from now the Gary Chamber of Commerce will review the success of its "Plan for Progress."
The challenge the chamber has set for itself is of unusual note since in its 1961-62 program it has added the Human Relations Committee. The work of the committee is to improve communication thereby creating a better understanding of social problems in Gary. The committee is to be composed of representative groups throughout Gary.
We have seen the chamber accomplish its goals in many areas. We have seen its members stand up and be counted.
Therefore, we have reason to believe that bigotry, injustice, ugliness is to leave town, for they cannot stand the bright rays of truth's searchlight upon them. Racial strife, and housing problems are hereby served with notice. Gary is coming of age, and her bid for her rightful place among the great cities of tomorrow is not to be hampered by the diseases of the past.
There is Work to be Done. Let's Go to Work! We share the responsibility to make Gary the happy, contented, and prosperous city that the future seems to promise. Our area is expected to attract over three or four times its present population. We are expected to yield more than two billion dollars in annual income to our residents. Gary is shaping up as the hub of a future "Promised Land," and we must not continue to sell ourselves short. The best way to make sure that we as Negroes, help to put Gary's "best foot forward." With a sincere effort on the part of our Chamber of Commerce, each person will have a chance to get a job, use all public facilities without question, and live where he can afford to buy. Gary needs her whole population working hand in hand and completely free of fear and distrust.
Gary can and will become great because we will all work together to help her fulfill her potential. After this, respect is something that must be earned. Its realization is dear.
So, to the Chamber, we give our congratulations. We owe our support, mentally, physically, and spiritually to help Gary turn the wheels of progress.
This we promise. How about you?
