The Army in Kansas.

The following statement, furnished by the Secretary of War in reply to a resolution of the Senate, will serve to show how many soldiers it has taken, and the rate of increase to make the people of Kansas "perfectly free to form and regulate their own domestic institutions in their own way:"

"Statement showing the number of troops stationed in Kansas for each quarter from the 1st of January, 1855, down to the 31st of December, 1857.

2d do 912
3d do 473
4th do 980
1st quarter of 1856 1,086
2d do 900
3d do 1,016

1st quarter of 1857 1,352

Respectfully submitted,
S. COOPER, Adjt. General.
Adjutant General's office, Jan. 20, 1858."

Thus it appears that the armed force in Kansas is just equal to the number of Slave State voters in the Territory according to Mr. Stanton's statement and gives to each of Mr. Calhoun's followers a man with a musket to do his fighting. The cost of these men, at the average rate of expense of our army for the past year, is $1,500, or $3,773,000—nearly four millions of dollars.

This sum the whole government has to be taxed to assist a minority of twenty-five hundred people in Kansas to dragoon a majority of from twelve to fifteen thousand into accepting a Constitution conceived in fraud, elaborated by violence, and pregnant with civil war.—[N. Y. Post.
