Troop 253 Camps On Florida Keys Over Weekend

West Summerland Keys and Camp Jackson Lee Sawyer for Boy Scouts were the destination of Troop No. 253 last weekend.

The October camping trip was a success in all phases. The main objective of this camp was advancement. This was for many of the new scouts a new experience for it was the first time they were away from home, on their own.

Swimming, fishing and hiking were among the enjoyments had at camp. A record number of scouts attending for Troop No. 253 was broken as there were twenty-one scouts at camp. Cooking was done by the scouts and everything was cooked in the open fireplace erected at camp by the Sea Scouts. Transportation to and from was furnished by the Columbia Laundry and C. J. Cornell, and religious services were attended at Marathon.

The Protestants attended services at the Community Church and the Catholics attended Holy Mass at the Chamber of Commerce building. Residents of Marathon expressed their desire to see the boys at Marathon again soon. Patrol leaders Tom Cornell, Paul Braun and Peter Knight assisted scoutmaster Tony Martinez in running a smooth camp.
