The Examiner is out formally for Lang for governor, having his name at its masthead in the regular way, but without the usual legend, 'subject to the action of the state convention.' This is purely a class nomination, so far as the Examiner is concerned. It does not give us Mr. Lang because of his services to the party, but simply because, as the head of the grange of the state, he has, in his published papers and addresses, displayed what the Examiner is pleased to term, remarkable ability. Now, to our mind, the Examiner has displayed much more ability in treating grange subjects than has the grand master, and by its own argument, instead of Lang having the governorship, the editor of the Examiner should be the man. As a democrat, as a citizen, or even as an aspirant for political preferment, we have but few objections to Mr. Lang, and those few would rapidly diminish were he to disconnect himself from the move to use the farmers as a class in foisting himself upon the state as governor. This attempt at this time is a dangerous innovation, and tends rapidly towards that chaos which is coming upon society by reason of the leveling instincts of a rapidly diffusing and widely extending communism. Mr. Lang's consenting to this use of his name will not add to his popularity among thoughtful people, and when the farmers themselves are brought face to face with the question, as they will be, in our opinion, before five years have rolled away, they will not thank him for his share in bringing about class warfare.
