FIRE NEARLY WIPES OUT NOME, ALASKA MINING CAMP

Fire starting late Monday from a spark on the roof of the Golden Gate hotel at Nome, famous Alaska mining camp, almost completely destroyed the business section of that city of 1500 souls, entailing a financial loss estimated at more than two million dollars and rendering more than 400 people homeless. Every grocery store in the city, together with nearly all the stocks of foodstuffs was destroyed. The food supplies are ample for 15 days, at the end of which time food and other supplies being shipped by boat from Seattle should arrive. The weather is within a few degrees of freezing and if winter should set in early, great suffering may result.
