Columbus, O., Feb. 6.--Calling out
state troops to suppress a prize fight is
such an unusual proceeding it is little
wonder that the threat made by Governor
Nash that he would call out the
entire national guard if necessary for
the suppression of the Jeffries-Ruhlin
contest at Cincinnati Feb. 15 has
aroused the greatest interest all over
the country. Governor Nash would
not deny today that there was a secret
arrangement with Sheriff Taylor by
which the latter will call for troops
and thus render it easy for the governor
to stop the affair. Governor Nash is on
record as holding in the case of the
Mansfield Dowieites that he cannot send
troops except upon demand of the
sheriff or mayor of a municipality.
Sheriff Taylor has agreed to help him
out by calling for troops.
The result is certain to cause a split
in the Republican organization in Cincinnati and means perhaps the overthrow of the Cox machine and the
creation of a new one with Mayor
Fleishmann at the head. Cox is opposing the fight on political grounds.
