Full Text

At the late term of the Court of Common Pleas in this town, two young men, belonging to Danvers, were indicted for and found guilty of going into the field of Mr. Putnam, of Danvers, in August last, and taking a quantity of cucumbers and melons from the vines—for which they were fined twenty dollars each, and costs of Court. It is to be hoped that this judicious and exemplary punishment will be a warning to the many thoughtless young men, who are frequently engaged in trespasses of this kind without consideration. They ought to reflect that they are liable to a fine of ten dollars for entering a garden or field with intent to steal; to a fine of fifty dollars for stealing any fruit or vegetable; and that these fines are doubled, when the offence is committed in the night time, or on the Sabbath.
