A daily newspaper, in eastern Pennsylvania, published a Christmas edition in a rather unusual manner. All items pertaining to crime and conflict were discarded from the cover page leaving the required space for such items completely blank. Obviously, the page was quite a spectacle but very thought-provoking. This was to represent, "Peace on earth, good will toward men." Such peace, all men hope for but no man attains. We have crossed the threshold of a new year. Already, the medium of news is screaming the horrors of crime and conflict. The sale of intoxicating beverages, immorality, crime in most categories, and conflict between nations will reach another record high. In the book of I Kings we read concerning a number of kings, "and... did evil in the sight of the Lord above all that were before him." Such is the present progression of man. What then is our hope? The Christian's hope is the imminent return of Christ. "For the Lord Himself shall be sent from Heaven with a shout, ... and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air: And so shall we ever be with the Lord." (I Thessalonians 4:16-18) The hope of the unbeliever is summed in Revelation 21:8. What is your hope for this new year?
