Three Arrested Running Still
Harnett County's rural policemen today announced the capture of an 800-gallon whiskey distillery and the arrest of its three operators.
Rural Policeman C. E. Moore said he and the other officers watched the three defendants bring in the barrels and fire up the still and then closed in on them.
Arrested at the still site, located in Upper Little River Township, were: Wayne Cummings and Archie Worrells, both about 30, and John McLean, 31-year-old Negro.
The officers said Cummings and Worrells drove up to the still site on a tractor loaded with barrels and then all three of them fired up the plant to begin its operation.
They said the vats were full of beer, indicating that one run had already been made.
It was a tin-type submarine still with copper condensers.
Officers participating in the raid were: Moore, B. E. Sturgill, Wade Stewart, Stanley Byrd and A. W. O'Quinn. The defendants were booked for trial in the county recorder's court.
The still was destroyed and the tractor was confiscated.
