DIGNITY OF OHIO.
The following paragraph, from a Harrisburg (Penn.) paper, is going the rounds of most of the newspapers in the Union, to the no small amusement of the people.
Harrisburg, Penn. Dec. 13.
In our house of representatives, yesterday, a message was received from the Governor, accompanied by a letter from the then acting Governor of Ohio, offering to exchange a map of that state, for a map of Pennsylvania! The letter of the acting Governor of Ohio excited general laughter in the House, not from any disrespect to him or the state of which he was the chief magistrate, but from the trifling and trafficking nature of the proposition, to exchange a single map of one state for that of the other, as if both were too much exhausted in finances to pay a few dollars for a map, and as if it were not beneath the dignity of two great states to be thus converting themselves into petty stationers, to barter and trade in paper and ink.
If such petty dealing has been authorised by the legislature of Ohio, it is time the people knew it, that they may, in future, elect members whose conduct will comport better with the dignity and character of the state. If Ohio must play the fool, let us not extend our folly beyond the boundaries of our own territory. As the legislature have made no provision for making their acts and resolutions known to the great mass of our citizens, it is very possible a resolution authorising this state traffic in maps, may have been adopted, and the acting Governor compelled to make known to other states, the ridiculous parsimony of Ohio. If the General Assembly have a quantity of surplus maps on hand, and have not liberality enough to present one to each of the United States, we would recommend a sale of them at auction, in lots to suit purchasers. Such a course would be as dignified, and comport as well with the sentiments of the public, as the auction sale of the site of Fort Washington, in Cincinnati, cut up into small building lots, by order of the Secretary of the Treasury of the United States. We hope, for the honor of Ohio, we shall hear no more of a barter trade with other states.
