The listed ages of a majority of big league ball players are suspect because many of them feel they can prolong their careers by making themselves "younger"—but not Allie Reynolds of the Yankees.
Reynolds is listed in some record books as 34 and in others as being 35, but he freely admits that he'll be 37 in February.
"What difference does it make whether I'm 26 or 36 as long as I can throw the ball," he adds. "What it says in the book won't make any difference when you're up there facing those hitters and the club won't care if you're 90 as long as you can get 'em out." And guys like Dutch Leonard and Satchel Paige prove his point.
Ben Hogan describes golf as a "game of mistakes" but explains that you can reduce the handicap by "eliminating the stupidity out there on the course."
"A 'Mistake' in the true sense of the word is a shot that wouldn't have been any good if you had hit it perfectly," says the man who makes fewer errors than anybody on the fairways...which probably is one of the real reasons why he stands at the top.
Conversation Corner: The New Guinea Greater Bird of Paradise, noted for its magnificent plumage, is a cousin of the common crow—proving once again that clothes make the man.
Collegiate football practice swings into gear next week and, eliminating the necessity of playing at all, the "experts" already have selected these sectional leaders: East, Pittsburgh; Midwest, Notre Dame; Midlands, Oklahoma; Southwest, Rice; Far West, UCLA; Southeast, Georgia Tech, and Atlantic Coast, Maryland. There probably will be some changes made.
Answering many requests, the double-duty wedge for traps and fairways which Lew Worsham used to hole out his winning eagle in the World Golf Championship at Tam O'Shanter is known as the MacGregor "F-T" double service iron. It is an original and exclusive model designed by Toney Penna, one of the game's finest professionals.
