Minot, N. D., July 12.-(Special.)-
Though to all
appearances
horse
stealing in northwestern North Dako-
ta had been exterminated when the
famous Williams county cases were
disposed of the last term of court,
a daring robbery was pulled off early
this morning when twenty four head
of horses belonging to C. W. Law-
rence, a well known horse trader,
were taken from the Soo stock yards
in which they were being kept.
Mr. Lawrence purchased the horses
on the Indian reservation several days
ago, thirty-two head being driven in
here at the time. Last night at 6
o'clock Mr. Lawrence sold four of
the bunch and wired the gates before
leaving for the night. This morning
he found the gates still wired but
twenty-four of the horses gone. The
robbers were traced along Hill street
and out over the south hill where
they had apparently taken a south-
west-
erly direction.
An automobile
posse was organized, including the
owner of the horses, and several of-
ficers, and the chase started. Three
half-breeds from the reservation who
have been in the city since Sunday
are suspected and it is believed that
they are endeavoring to get the ani-
mals back on the reservation where it
would be hard to trace them. The
horses are all branded with the brand
used on the reservation. The officers
may have trouble unless they are able
to locate the thieves before the line
is reached.
