Milton H. Blount, an old-time engineer on the Rio Grande who resides in Palisade and who is well known in Grand Junction, suffered a serious injury in having the flesh almost completely peeled from his foot and ankle by being caught between the main rod and the parallel rod of a new Brooks engine which he was trying out in the Salida yards on Monday. The engine had just come out of the shops after having been overhauled, and was supposed to be in perfect shape; but Mr. Blount took the machine down the track to test it before putting it on the passenger train to arrive Sunday evening. The engine was safely run to Cleora and the engineer alighted. He raised himself by stepping on the main rod to examine the axle to see if it was running hot. As he stood in this position the engine throttle suddenly flew open, setting the engine in motion. The brakes being set, the drivers spun around rapidly. Mr. Blount's foot was caught between the main and parallel rods, tearing the flesh almost clear to the bone. It was almost miraculous that the whole leg did not slip between the bars. The force of the start threw the engineer 50 feet. He fell on his back and shoulder, but was uninjured except in the foot. It will be several months before Engineer Blount can use the injured foot.
