No intelligence of importance from the frontiers of Portugal had been received. The Spaniards avoided pitch battles, and by pursuing a system of partizan warfare, greatly wearied and perplexed the enemy.
Napoleon has given his troops in Spain to understand, that they can expect no pay from France, but must obtain their recompence and subsistence from Spanish contributions. The city of Salamanca has been impelled to furnish 20,000 beds, for the French hospitals; and great numbers of soldiers were dying every day.
The head quarters of Regnier, were at Merida. The troops of Ballesteros, occupied Aracena, and Valverde del Camino : but afterwards retired on the approach of the French. A skirmish ensued and the French again retired. An advanced guard of the enemy entered Talavera la Real : and another in Mantigo; but the former were obliged to retire to Merida, where the French head quarters were established.
