It is no small addition to the other agreeable accounts from New-York, by the last packet to find that the Marquis de Lafayette, with 2000 men under his command, is so hemmed in and blocked up on all sides that he has no other alternative but either to fight or surrender. Should he choose the former, the consequence, against such a superiority of force, is evident, and must be the ruin of the cause in which he has shown himself so long such a violent partizan. For the active and inveterate zeal of that turbulent Frenchman may be attributed, in a great measure, the obstinacy of the colonists; and therefore the fate that now seems to await him, cannot be viewed, by any friend to this country, without the most heart-felt satisfaction; as his death or captivity, some one of which appears to be unavoidable, must deprive rebellion of one of its most furious and successful abettors.
It seems as if of the two alternatives he chose fighting but the consequence has proved those gentlemen to be wretched logicians.
