Full Text

Extract of a letter from Captain Bainbridge, to Commodore Preble, dated Tripoli, November 1, 1803.

Had I not sent the schooner from us, the accident might have been prevented. It not we should have been able to have extricated ourselves from a Barbary prison: But my motive in ordering her off Cape Bon was to grant more efficient protection to our commerce than I could by keeping her with me. I hope you will consider the arrangement as judicious and done with the best intentions, although it has proved unfortunate.
