The postponement of the Chicago Convention, which was announced on the 22d, is matter of great political significance. As the friends of McClellan were for immediate action, and the Vallandighamites opposed to it; it is not difficult to understand in whose interest the Executive Committee is at this time. But that of itself is not decisive of his fate; but the recent appointment of delegates from the northwest is; and there is to-day, nothing more certain than that a large majority of the Convention will declare for an immediate peace, by a recognition of the independence of the rebels, and will select a candidate whose record is clear on that question, and who has never aided or abetted what they call this 'unholy war.'
The only States on which McClellan can rely for support are New York, and Pennsylvania: and we are inclined to believe the latter will be found against him in August. The State Convention, which met some months since, resolved in favor of him, and appointed as delegates for the State at large four of his adherents; but the district delegates will doubtless be Vallandighamites. The State convention was held some time since, when it was thought his name would inspire enthusiasm; and that was calculated to induce the wavering to support him; but to-day there are none so foolish as to suppose that Lincoln and Johnson will be defeated, and therefore McClellan the Cautious, is unceremoniously dropped.
In the Ohio State Convention, Vallandigham was beaten by a majority of two votes; yet in twelve out of the nineteen districts, unqualified Vallandighamites have been selected as delegates, and in another, the delegation is tied, by the selection of Cox and McDary: and in the five in which no action has been taken; at least four will be committed to peace men, and a peace platform; and we have no doubt but Pennsylvania will follow the example of Ohio.
The postponement of the Convention evinces that the Copperhead party proposes adopting a cowardly policy—one that never won in politics, and never will win. Why were the democrats once so universally successful? Because, whether right or wrong, they always were positive, and radical; and now that they have adopted the conservative and trimming course, they must expect the fate of conservatives and trimmers—uniform defeat.
