Baptist churches of North Carolina have a prospective list of 1.000,000 Sunday school members and other Protestant denominations probably have as many or more. L. L. Morgan, secretary of Baptist Sunday school work in North Carolina told members of the Wilmington Kiwanis club yesterday at their regular noon luncheon meeting at the Friendly. Morgan, who has been identified with Sunday school work in the state for the past 25 years was guest speaker for the day and was introduced by the Rev. W. J. Stephenson.
Nominally in charge of the church census of Wilmington which was completed yesterday, Morgan told Kiwanians at the outset of his talk that Wilmington has offered the easiest solution to a problem of recruiting 50 workers for the Wilmington Baptist association Sunday school enlargement campaign. that he had ever experienced. After six months of preparation, a meeting was called for the past Saturday afternoon, the speaker said, and 32 churches had representatives and 49 workers were recruited almost immediately.
Stressing the point that when the world is at its worst, that is the time that the churches should be at their best, the speaker said that now churches everywhere a re offered a golden opportunity for the recruiting of more Sunday school and church goers. At present, he said, Baptist churches of the state have an enrollment of 412,000 in 699 churches and that a million more await the call to spiritual teaching.
Can Prevent War
Continuing, the speaker pointed out that if the churches of the world band together, another world war can be prevented from a spiritual standpoint, but in order that the ratio of Bible readers be reversed from one to two to two to one, more' buildings will be needed and more workshops added -workshops for the teaching of God's word to children and adults as well.
In closing, Morgan said that Sunday school teaching offers to men and women, the greatest opportunity to serve the men and women of tomorrow than anything that presents itself today. He reminded the club that many outstanding men of the state, governors, judges, captains of industry and others are following devotedly the same service to their fellow man, as did Jesus, the outstanding teacher of all history.
