Full Text
Richie, the Editor of the Richmond Enquirer, is absolutely raving about the election of Mr. Rives to the Senate of the United States. Poor man. But this was the unkindest cut of all! What! elect the man who could not swallow all the imbecility and corruption of the Administration without demurring? Elect the man who had the courage and independence to oppose the rotten, miserable and ruinous policy of Martin and his clan! What! invest with the dignity of a Senator the man who disregarded the denunciations of the drowned Richie, to act the patriot in his country's cause! 'Twas too bad to thus elevate the worthy and talented Rives in opposition to the will and wishes of Richie. That magnanimous man who left his native land and came to the home of the free to enlighten our dark and benighted souls Alas! poor Richie, thy wand is broken—the charm is flown and Virginia is free!
