EDITOR JOURNAL:
Dear Sir.- Have we not One Father and one Truth? Why then are we torn into a thousand quarrelling sects? Has Truth lost its simplicity, and is Jesus clothed in a harlequin's garb, or his robe of righteousness been torn into shreds and divided among his foes?
While speculative faith in regard to matters unknowable must be as varied as the tints upon the waves, and trifling as the floating dust, the sense of duty is graven on the heart, and righteousness stands as a mountain of adamant.
If orthodoxy is right, it is because it teaches what God requires, and the rewards he promises (Isa. 58, 6:8.) In speculative faith there is room for Mormons, Dowieites, Eddyites, Spiritualists, Islamism and Paganism, for Error has a thousand ways, only one has truth,
And truth crushed to earth shall rise again.
The eternal years of God are hers,
While error wounded, writhes in pain
And dies among her worshippers.
Gentlemen of the Cloth, please show the people that it is not your duty to heal the sick as well as Dowie. (Epistle of James, 5:14) Exhibit the signs that follow them that believe. (Mark 16, 17-18) or kindly get out of the way of Elijah 2:1, who is sending out proofs of having healed almost as many people as the Great Elijah killed. Show us. Please, that you do not "judge for reward or teach for hire, or divine for money" and that your "Zion will not be plowed as a field, or your Jerusalem become heaps. (Micah 3. 11:12.) Look the Bible in the Face, which you are ordained to explain. I am not your foe; and heartily wish that if right you may hasten the time when Truth shall cover the Earth.

Main Argument
the letter argues that despite one father and truth, humanity is divided into quarreling sects due to speculative faiths, while true duty and righteousness are clear; it challenges clergy to perform biblical signs like healing or step aside for those who do, and to teach without seeking reward.
