Full Text

NEW-YORK, February 11.

Extract of a letter from Baltimore, January 31.

Our state is now likely to be involved in all the horrors of party, occasioned by a bill brought into the Assembly by our Premier, Mr. Chase, for laying a tax of four shillings per poll upon all the inhabitants of this state, for the purpose of paying the clergy, leaving to every individual to fix upon his own clergyman.

The law had two readings, when 26 were for it, and 24 against it; but Mr. Chase, not wishing to risk it, had the final decision postponed until the next session, when I expect and hope it will be negatived. The Church people are pretty generally for it; but all the other societies are almost unanimously against it, as they consider any religious compulsion a violation of their natural right: they talk loudly of resisting it by force.
