Council met pursuant to adjournment. Present—Bartlet, President; Lantz, Herbruck, Schwalm, McCann, Weaver, Rohrer and Monnot. Minutes of last meeting read and approved.
Petitions—From property owners on S. Market street, asking the council to gravel said street as far south as the railroad. Referred to Committee on Streets and Alleys.
From residents on Newton street, asking council to so grade said street as to render it fit for the passage of wagons. Same referred.
From property owners on Tenth street asking for grade on that street between Poplar and Market streets. Referred to Committee on Streets and Alleys.
From Louis Schaefer, asking council to confer with the County Commissioners in the matter of paving Tuscarawas street from Market to the west line of Court street, in the same manner in which the public square is being paved. Referred to Committee on Streets and Alleys.
From residents on West Tuscarawas street, asking that the tunnel on said street be cleaned out and grate put over it. Street Commissioner instructed to make the necessary repairs.
From Mr. Trump, asking that the time for paving in front of his lot on East Tuscarawas street be extended until spring, when he intends to build. Not allowed. Street Commissioner was instructed to notify property owners opposite Mr. Trump's on the same street, to pave their sidewalks with brick.
From Mr. R. E. Smith, asking the council to appoint an inspector to determine the quality and weight of bread, and to fix rules regulating its sale. Referred to City Solicitor.
From Mr. Gibbs, asking council to establish grade on Seventh street between market and Walnut, as he proposes to build. Committee on Streets and Alleys instructed to secure the services of the City Engineer, and establish said grade.
Reports of Committees—Committee on Streets and Alleys reported the culvert on Charles street over Shriver's run in need of repair, and recommended awarding the contract to a certain party for $25. Accepted.
Committee on City Property reported cistern on public square completed according to contract. Accepted.
City Solicitor reported that the matter of the James Tonner's pavement had been settled by the city paying the penalty attached for more pavement, in view of the unsatisfactory condition of the grade.
The contract for cementing the cistern on the public square was awarded to Jeff Koontz for $25.00.
The Committee on Streets and Alleys were instructed to contract for iron plates to put over the sewers at the crossings on the public square.
A motion to raise the crossing over Market street from the Cassilly corner to the First National Bank, even with the curb stone, was lost.
On motion the city clerk was instructed to draw an order for Abe Eitneier for $1500, on contract for paving and one for Melbourne & Bell for $500 for curbing.
The bill of Canton Gaslight Company of $87.54 was referred to the Committee on Claims.
City Solicitor was instructed to collect the bill for paving the sidewalk north of the Disciple church.
