EXTENSION OF THE SOUTHERN MINNESOTA RAILROAD

Mr. O. D. Brown, Chief Engineer of the Southern Minnesota. Railroad. whom we met on the westward bound passenger train on Monday,- informed us he was then on his way to Winnebago City for the purpose of surveying the proposed line of the Southern Minnesota from Winnebago to Worthington. The survey will be attended with many inconveniences and hardships at this season of the year; but the duty cannot well be avoided, as the company is obliged, we believe, to extend its road next season in order to save its land grant. If work should be commenced next spring, as it probably will be, times will become lively on our western frontier. and the country that has, suffered so many reverses from grasshopper invasion, will become newly attractive, and if spared from the ravages of these pests will soon take rank among the most busy and wealthy portions of the State. The Southern Minnesota is destined to be one of the best roads of the State. and its importance will at once be revealed when it is extended.—Lanesboro Journal.

We copy the above as another item showing that the Southern Minnesota Company is in earnest and will push the road through as rapidly as possible. We call especial attention to the last paragraph. The Southern Minnesota is already one of the best paying roads in the State: and its importance to us as a straight cut and outlet to the great lakes can scarcely be exaggerated. If work begins in the spring, there will be an abundance of employment for all who are willing to work in this and other of the new counties, and there will be lively times, as the Journal says.
