Since the November election is now a thing of the past and the boys are beginning to talk about the next session of the Legislature, the question of who will be Georgia's next Governor is being discussed.
Of course, it is too early to say definitely who will be elected because we do not yet know who will run or what the circumstances will be in Georgia in 1958.
But there is one thing that we can say: Lieutenant Governor Ernest Vandiver is out in front and has the inside track.
He has been known as a candidate for the last two years and he has been working at the job as hard as he knows how. He has a lot of friends who have been working just about as hard as he has been working. Some of his friends are in important positions and they have done a lot of spade work in almost every county in the state.
He has one decided advantage and that is that, so far, he has no opposition. Of course, it is too much to expect that he will have none when the time to run comes.
The Lieutenant Governor has another decided advantage in that he is a part of the Griffin Administration and will probably have their support. At the same time, he was Herman Talmadge's front man in his campaign in 1948 and during Talmadge's six years as governor he was Talmadge's Adjutant General of the state.
He is known to have shared Talmadge's views on state government and had a close connection with the hard core of the leaders in the state who enabled Talmadge to be elected Governor twice and to win such an overwhelming victory for the United States Senate.
In addition, Vandiver married Senator Dick Russell's niece and he will certainly have the best wishes and blessings and support of the Russell people over the state.
And, my friends, this is enough to put a man out front and to give him the inside track.
Vandiver is a very retiring and modest type of person. He is very sure of his ground before he moves and is usually very sound when he does take a position. He has from now until September, 1958 to continue campaigning and if he continues to grow during the rest of the time as he has during the past few years, it is going to be difficult to keep him from being elected.
So, we predict that you can watch Ernest Vandiver.
He's out front and has the advantage.
