TO MOVE THE CAPITAL
Greenwood Citizen Makes Suggestion in Greenville News.
In its issue of Saturday the Greenville News prints the following, which it says is from a prominent citizen of Greenwood:
The News has received the following communication from a prominent Greenwood citizen:
Editor The News.
In thinking very seriously over the situation in Columbia, I have been wondering if it would not be in the interest of economy. good government and the safety, and protection of the very best interests of the state of South Carolina to have the capital removed from Columbia. At least it might be well to have the sessions of the legislature held in some other place until the tremendous and powerful and selfish, and most unreasonable demands centered in and around Columbia are broken. Conditions there seem to be such as to make it almost impossible for the average legislator to free himself from the entangling alliances. and enable him to consider the state at large, instead of the selfish and self centered interests which exist in Columbia. If these people can get what they want and demand they care not what burdens it may impose upon the people of South Carolina at large, Columbia wants another Winthrop built up in that place to make up for her loss to Rock Hill in losing Winthrop College. She wants another state house, drives through the grounds of the present state house, millions for first one thing and then another. And she cares not a cent for what the cost may be and the burdens it may impose. I am convinced but for these things our legislature which went to Columbia pledged to economy would never have had the trouble that has confronted and made it a spectacle to the state and the country at large.
I hope the next session of the legislature will be held in Greenville or in some other place until Columbia shall come to herself and discover that she is not the whole show. I am sure Greenville could and would provide adequate housing for the body and make the members glad for the change. I am not a citizen of Greenville and so can not be charged with making this suggestion through selfishness, but in the very best interests of all citizens of the state.
Citizen.
