The Austin Miners' Union Go to
the Scene of Trouble at a Mo-
ment's Notice—Superintendent
Bothwell Ordered to Leave, which
He did on the Double Quick—Mine
and Mill Closed Down—All Quiet.
[Special to the Sentinel.]
Austin, March 12.—At a meeting of the
Austin Miners' Union on Thursday night,
to take action in the Lewis mining trouble,
it was decided that the whole force of the
Union should start for Lewis immediately.
All members were quickly notified, quit
work and met at their hall at noon. At
that time 275 men had assembled, armed
and prepared to assert the rights of the
Union. The army took the train at 3 o'clock
yesterday morning, disembarking at Ga-
lena Station and marching to Lewis, seven
miles.
Bothwell, Superintendent of the Star &
Grove Mine, lately from Colorado, the
reducer in chief of miners' wages, having
been warned of the early arrival of 275
Austin miners, gathered his worldly goods
and took his family and left the camp for
San Francisco. Before leaving he came to
the miners' terms, offering to pay $4 per
day for work, and ordering the foreman to
have none but Union men, or men who
would join the Union,
The Union men went to work yesterday
morning, but for some reason both mine
and mill closed down to-day.
A man named Toomey, who had been a
union man, but had deserted the cause when
the trouble had come, was given 12 hours
to leave the camp; he left.
Bothwell is expected to return to-mor-
row. On the other hand, it is reported
that he is interviewing the Government
authorities, and that the end is not yet.
The Austin miners are now at Galena
Station awaiting a train, and will arrive
home to-night. All quiet.
