THE natural result of the abuse of the liberty of the press on the part of the Jacobins and Democrats, has long since been foreseen, but the consequences have but just began to ripen into general notice, and feeling.
Freneau, Greenleaf, Adams and Bache gave rise to this substitution of opprobrium and invective, for reason and argument. Though there were attempts to defeat their purposes, by honest endeavours to bring them to a sense of decency and propriety, all would not do.—Despairing of any other mode of defence, several writers have recently entered the lists, and defeated these miscreants in their own way: But as every well-educated man cannot descend to such weapons, duels have been fought. and blood spilt on these occasions. The Champion of audacious Giles, and B. Livingston. have each destroyed their federal antagonists, who died in defence of virtue, decency and their country. Thus stands the account at present,—Dr.
The Enemies of Virtue, of Order and of their Country, to the Lives of two brave, though unfortunate. Men. How the account will stand in future, time only can shew.
