The Washington Globe, in an article headed "The Republic is in danger," takes occasion to refer with many expressions of condemnation to the resignation of the Whig members of the Ohio Legislature some time ago. It says;—

"Such principles, carried into practical operation, will at once overthrow our Government. If successfully borne out, a minority (not a majority) will rule, and if resisted, the consequence is anarchy and civil broils if it shall once become the ordinary resort of a defeated faction to withdraw from the halls of legislation—thus leaving them without a quorum, and, consequently, incapable of all legislative action—all government will be at an end. New elections will be followed by new resignations; and the force of appealing to the ballot-boxes be followed by the tragedy of civil war and bloodshed. The Republic will not then be in danger, or it will be no more."

It is a little remarkable that with so quick a perception to spy out the dangerous tendencies of resigning offices with a view to defeat iniquitous legislation, the Globe should be blind to the evils of retaining office with a deliberate refusal to perform constitutionally imposed duties. In the former case an appeal is made to the people; in the latter, the incumbents will not perform their duty nor give the people an opportunity to put men in their places who will. The Globe might have referred to the course of the recusant Senators in Tennessee, and to the proceedings of the nineteen Electors in this State some years ago—but as no matter of accusation against the Whigs could be found in either of those instances, it was not convenient, probably, to remember them.—Balt.
