The "Calm Observer" is exerting all the energy of body and mind which the violence of his passion still permits him to retain, in endeavours to reinstate himself in the station from which the just resentment of the Federalists had driven him. Not content with requiring the influence of men of his own character, he has the meanness to solicit, both by letter and personal application, that of the Federalists themselves. But they will recollect that "the tyger crouches before he leaps upon his prey."
The gin-drinking pauper who is said to conduct Bache's paper, boasts of having been highly complimented by a respectable English merchant of this city. The assertion is undoubtedly a lie; as there is no man, "born," as Bolingbroke says, "in England, under any circumstances, in any situation," who would not be ashamed and afraid to perpetrate such a lie as an act of humiliation and disgrace. The exultation with which the vagabond mentions it, shows, however, that the compliments of gentlemen are not "renewed upon him every day."
