Thursday—Dr. Winans presented a report recommending two additional Bishops. A long debate ensued, in which the report was opposed by Messrs. Smith and Longstreet, who thought one more Bishop enough. Dr. Smith objected to the election of two Bishops, he said, mainly on the score of the inefficiency of the present plan of operations—this view he sustained in a speech which was regarded as being an argument tending to supersede the Bishops, and was replied to by Messrs. McMahan, and McFerrin. Dr. S. disclaimed the meaning imputed to him, and declared that he believed in Methodist Episcopacy.—
The resolution for the election of two Bishops was agreed to—and after prayer, the election was gone into, and Rev. Dr. Capers, of South Carolina, and Rev. Dr. Robert Paine, of the Tennessee Conference, were elected. Rev. Dr. Bascom received a very large vote, notwithstanding the impression entertained by many that he would not serve, if elected, and that he could not be spared from Transylvania University, of which he is President.
